Custom firmwire for PSP?

Hello, I am thinking about getting a psp and modding it. I was wondering, does the PSP have to be verison 1.5 or lower to be able to use custom firmwire? When you buy a PSP, does it automatically have 1.5 firmwire, or does sony ship them out with the latest of their firmwire? Also can someone explain whats the difference between modding a phat psp and a slim psp? Why does everybody say modding a slim is harder? whats the reason? Which custom firmwire is th best? Which one includes the ablity to run homebrew and has the latest sony features such as internet browser, skype, etc. Thank you
Will all the emulators, applications, and hacks that work on the Phat psp work on the slim

The psp has to be under the 3.0 categories. Sony fixed downgrade over that. You can be higher than 3.0 but you will need lumines or GTA (not sure). Anything higher than 3.50 I think is non downgradeble. If you buy a sony psp brand new. They usually ship it with firmware 3.71. If you buy it from gamestop they usually update it. Their isnt really a difference with moding the phat against the slim. My friend had a slim and it did pretty much the same thing a phat did. I just don’t think it can run the 1.50 kernal subset. If you get a firmware higher than the recomended. You will need a pandora’s battery. Which is usually $50-70 unless you make your own. It my opinion I think custom firmware 3.71 m33-3 is the best. Because many homebrew applications run on that version. But on 3.71 their is no skype. You can find skype on verson 3.90. Some features when modding you will find is. You can edit your xmb (your main menu), you can hack games, you can play downloaded iso’s/cso’s. You can run emulators (plays N64, sega, etc) You can email me on chrisbusinessacc@yahoo.com (not very thought into I know) if you need any more help. Yes all aplications that work on the phat work on the slim.
