Sony camcorder/ mac compatibility?
Im confused. We are looking into buying a DCR-DVD610 DVD Handycam Camcorder. However it says the camcorder software is not compatible with Mac computers (Imovie). Now I was thinking that the memory stick duo it comes with can easily be read by Mac just like my psp memory card. I was also thinking the dvd that camcorder records on could be read by the mac? Im truly confused. Can anyone clarify he situation or me please?
I have the same issue. My Mac can read the video, and it even plays it. However, when going to iMovie, or even Final Cut Pro, the file type that comes from the Sony is not supported. The file is stereo-interleaved, meaning that the audio cannot be separated from the video for editing. iMovie and Final Cut will play the video, but it plays without the audio. There are conversions you can do, but they always reduced the quality of the video.
So the solution is to actually buy a digital video camera from the Mac store that you know will be supported on their programs. Its worth it because the best programs out there for easy and professional looking video editing is iMovie and Final Cut Pro. Also, Quicktime Pro resolves some of those issues, but again, quality issues after conversion.
