Avatar Video Games:The Last Airbender for PSP/ NDS Video Games

Upon landing on the planet of Pandora, the first thing that hits you is how gorgeous it all looks. Lush, green forests stretch out as far as the eye can see. Wind caresses the leaves of trees, and the air is filled with the subtle cacophony of birdsong and breeze. It’s easy to become captivated by everything you see. Of course, it’s all a trap, because the second thing you become aware of is how everything in your immediate environment is potentially lethal. The planet’s fauna and a large proportion of its flora view you and your human compatriots as at best, threats that need to be eradicated, and at worst, potential meals. The local inhabitants are less than impressed with the human incursion into their homelands and have taken to sabotaging the bases that have been established. Even the air can kill you and all military personnel are advised to wear an oxygen mask outside any base structures to avoid asphyxiating. I’m speaking of course, about the world of James Cameron’s Avatar. This science fiction epic looks set to enthral audiences while pushing the boundaries of modern entertainment. In this instance, I refer to the video game tie-in which will use the same 3-D technology as the movie.

The plot of Avatar’s game is a prequel to the events of the movie and is intended to introduce players to the world of Pandora. Players take on the role of a military technician who has recently arrived on the planet. After a brief introduction to the hostile nature of Pandora, the players are addressed by their commanding officer. They are told that the indigenous population – the Na’vis – are resistant to the humans’ presence on Pandora and have someone on the inside at the human camps who is helping them by sabotaging vital military efforts. They are also shown to a room where they are introduced to the Avatars themselves; the human military has grown Na’vi/human hybrids which can be controlled remotely by the players (who have the correct DNA structure). Given that the Na’vi Avatars can breathe the air of Pandora and are physically more naturally adept to the planet’s environment, players will be able to traverse the planet’s forest more easily.

Avatar
plays like an open-world third-person shooter with RPG elements. The never-ending forests of Pandora provide the players with quite a few objectives, such as repairing sonic emmitters to drive off some animals, or saving a wayward technician who has taken a few wrong turns and found himself overrun by the planet’s wildlife. Objectives appear on the in-game map – accessed by the select button – and players can follow makeshift trails or rivers to get to them; in the build I played, my military grunt was given access to both a makeshift buggy and an armoured motorboat called a Gator. Players can also examine their surroundings by holding down on the left bumper. This will scan any plants or animals in their surroundings, which both adds to the game’s database as well as assesses whether or not the wildlife being scanned poses any immediate threat.

My very brief hands-on with Avatar proved it to be a game of two halves. On the one hand, it’s gameplay feels a little incomplete, but on the other it boasts an intriguing plot, fully realised environments and an RPG element that has the potential to lend it some depth.Avatar Video Games and Avatar NDS video games I very love two video games on protable.
