The first ps3 controller released by Sony was the SIXAXIS motion sensing wireless controller which was then followed by DualShock 3. The SIXAXIS ps3 controller is called so because the ps3 console detects its movement along six axes. The word sixaxis which is a contraction of the two words “six axis” is a palindrome. The SIXAXIS ps3 controller is a wireless one which is linked to the console by means of Bluetooth and there is a small socket provided in the controller for the purpose of charging it. The controller can be charged even while it is being used. The SIXAXIS controller can even be used along with PSP Go. The SIXAXIS wireless ps3 controller looks exactly like its predecessors but weighs substantially less since there were no devices for the vibration function.
The SIXAXIS controller doesn’t come with the vibration function unlike its predecessors for which it was very much criticized. Sony released a statement saying implementing vibration in SIXAXIS caused some serious problems in its motion sensing capabilities and was hence scrapped.
The SIXAXIS controller can operate up to 30 hours after full charge. The battery is fully removable and can be replaced. The SIXAXIS controller can detect translational and rotational motions along all 3 dimensional axes and hence giving it 6 degrees of freedom. The SIXAXIS controller differed in many respects from the DualShock 2. The analog sticks were made more sensitive. The frame below the L2 and R2 button was omitted giving a trigger like feeling. And the analog activation button of the ps3 controller was replaced by the “PS” button which can be used to access the home screen instantly and also to switch on and off the input from the controller to the ps3 system.
