AN OPEN LETTER TO SONY FROM THE WEBMASTER OF PSPFREAKS.COM

Recently, I became aware of the true nature of Sony's Digital Rights Management Program distributed on Sony Audio CDs. I learned that when installed on a user's computer, the program contains a "
Root Kit" that hides from the user's operating system and resists removal by antivirus tools. I further learned about concerns that the software "phones home" to inform Sony of the CD being played on the user's machine. I also learned that the software resists removal and there have even been reports of damaged operating systems and loss of CD functionality, and that there have been the report of viruses that exploit the root kit.

Despite my past support of sony products and services,  I consider Sony's dealings in this matter to be dishonest and irresponsible.  I cannot in good conscience support an organization whose practices are harmful to the Internet community.

Toward that end, I have removed this Sony Playstation Portable enthusiast website PSPfreaks.com from the Internet.  The site will remain down until Sony offers a public apology and a means for users to remove the DRM software, in its entirety, from their computers, and until Sony makes a pledge to respect the privacy and security of its customers in the future.

I urge other owners and prospective buyers of Sony products to join me in the boycott of Sony products until the organization takes a responsible position towards Internet privacy.

Sincerely,

Matt Chroust
